JACKSONVILLE — The Sulphur Springs Wildcats got off to a hot start to the season Friday by defeating the Jacksonville Indians on the road. Though they trailed at halftime, the Wildcats rallied back in the second half to the take the win.
The first quarter would be a defensive battle, as both teams struggled to get on the board. This would lead the the first quarter ending in a scoreless tie.
The second quarter would see both teams begin to find their rhythm, as the scoreless tie ended. The Indians would outscore the Wildcats 9-7 in the second half, taking a 9-7 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the third quarter was another competitive one, with both teams continuing to play well. Both teams scored one touchdown each, as the Indians maintained a 16-14 lead going into the final quarter.
Knowing they needed to step up their game to win, the Wildcats would do just that. The Wildcats would score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, pulling off a 29-16 comeback win.
Brady Driver completed eight of 17 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 15 times for 136 yards and scored two more touchdowns on the ground, finishing as the Wildcats’ leading rusher.
Cameron Jefferson rushed nine times for 44 yards, while Dee Rose-Luke carried the ball seven times for 38 yards.
Skyler Lewis was the leading receiver, catching five passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Three other receivers caught one pass each: Jaxson Haire for 50 yards, Chris Adams for 33 yards, and Wyatt Watson for nine yards.
With the win, the Wildcats begin their season at 1-0. Their next game is Friday, when they travel to Mount Pleasant to take on the amount Pleasant Tigers.
