THREE INDUCTED INTO THE WILDCAT HALL OF HONOR
Three former Sulphur Springs High School athletes were inducted into the Hall of Honor Friday, Sept. 15.
Families of the inductees were also present to witness the honors. Also attending was Bob Lindley, a 1945 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School who wrote the school song.
Betty Sue Gooch graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in May 1981. According to her presenter and former tennis coach Steve Armstrong, Gooch was an extremely talented tennis player who loved the game. He recounted stories of Gooch’s skill on the court and highlighted her skill at tennis, as well as track and volleyball.
In her acceptance speech, Gooch spoke of the support she received from her parents, the late Sue and Jack Chubb, who were her biggest supporters.
Fred McGill graduated from SSHS in May 1987. McGill was known for his athleticism, toughness and leadership skills. During his senior year, he was named District MVP, as well as team MVP, for his prowess on the football field. McGill went on to play football at the University of Arkansas.
Presenter Doug Evans, one of McGill’s football coaches, praised not only McGill’s skills on the field, but also his leadership on and off of it.
McGill said he was very grateful for the support of his family and the SSHS coaching staff, and that he learned many life lessons from them.
Mason Y’Barbo was a three year starter on the Wildcats’ varsity offensive line. He was named to the All-State team during the Wildcats’ 2008 State Champion season. Y’Barbo earned a full scholarship to the University of North Texas, where he earned All-Conference and national honors.
Greg Owens, former SSHS athletic director and Y’Barbo’s head football coach, spoke about Y’Barbo’s natural drive and leadership. The pair have remained friends since Y’Barbo graduated in 2010.
Y’Barbo said he was grateful for the many lessons the Wildcat coaches, and particularly Owens, taught him. He also said he was grateful for his parents’ guidance.
